How to Style Dolly Parton Iron-On Patches on a Tote (#DollyDay Edition)

Happy #DollyDay! It's 9/25 (read it out loud: 9-2-5), and we're celebrating the queen of big hair and bigger hearts the best way we know how: with patches. Here's how to turn a plain tote, denim jacket or hat into a full Dolly moment with our embroidered Dolly Parton iron-on patches. No sewing required.

Meet the Dolly patches

Want all three, plus a pink cowboy boot pin and a Let's Go Girls cowboy hat pin? The Ultimate Dolly Parton Set bundles all five for $33.

First, cue up the Dolly playlist

Every good craft session needs a soundtrack, and today there's only one option. Put on your favorite Dolly Parton playlist before you plug in the iron. "9 to 5" is basically required on 9/25, "Jolene" is perfect for arranging your patches, and "Coat of Many Colors" couldn't be more fitting for a patch project. Sing along, take your time and have fun with it.

How to iron on a patch in 5 steps

  1. Set your iron to the cotton setting and turn the steam off.
  2. Lay your tote or jacket flat on a firm surface and smooth out any wrinkles. Arrange all your patches before you start pressing.
  3. Cover the patch with a thin cloth or a sheet of parchment paper to protect the embroidery.
  4. Press down firmly, without sliding the iron, for about 30 to 45 seconds.
  5. If you can, flip the fabric and press from the inside for another 20 to 30 seconds. Let it cool completely before you test the edges.

Tip: iron-on works best on cotton, canvas and denim. Skip nylon, leather and anything that might melt, and wash patched pieces inside out on cold.

3 ways to style your Dolly patches

1. The Main Character tote

Any of these hero patches can be your Main Character: the visual anchor your whole design is built around. When you're building a tote with all three, arrange them in a triangle: put one patch up top and the other two on either side below it. The triangle keeps the eye moving across the bag and makes the whole design feel balanced. Clip the boot pin and hat pin onto the strap and you're done. More is more.

2. The Rodeo Queen mashup

Pair one Dolly patch with a few Supporting Cast pieces from our Rodeo Queen collection, like pink cowboy hats, horses and cow print. Keep the Dolly patch the biggest thing on the bag so everything else frames it.

3. Heart on your sleeve (or your back)

Iron the Dolly Heart patch onto a sleeve or back pocket of a denim jacket for a subtle nod, or go big and center it on the back. Add the hat pin to your collar for a little extra sparkle.
